The Value of Clinton's Photo-Op With Kim Jong Il
Last week's release of two American journalists from North Korea produced a pair of memorable images. There was the heartwarming scene of the women, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, joyfully emerging from the plane in Southern California into the arms of their families, whom they hadn't seen in months. But before that, there was also a more ambiguous tableau: former president Bill Clinton sitting woodenly with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in a Politburo-style group portrait. -

Give North Korea a break | John Delury
20 Nov 2009 | 7:30 amDenuclearisation will only come when bridges have been built with Pyongyang and it feels firmly set on a new economic courseNegotiations over the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula look set to resume. Sadly, they are unlikely to end soon. Talk of a "grand bargain" remains just that – talk.Trust between North Korea and the US, South Korea and Japan is almost non-existent. While all leaders – including North Korea's Kim Jong-il – remain committed to denuclearisation in public, none appears ready to risk much in terms of domestic politics to achieve that end. So the best the world… -

Better Exchange This Time
10 Nov 2009 | 7:00 amThe last time the North and South Korean navies clashed seriously in 2002, the latter came off badly. The ROK Navy seems to have been better prepared this time: According to South Korean officials, fighting erupted when a 215-ton North Korean vessel ventured across the so-called Northern Limit Line, a sea border drawn by the United Nations at the end of the war. The North has never accepted the border, and there were deadly naval clashes in 1999 and 2002. Those moves were seen variously as an attempt to grab American attention or as a bargaining ploy to win food aid from the South. Two… -

ROK’s Gift to American Firearms Enthusiasts
25 Sep 2009 | 1:03 pmMy apologies to Richardson and the readers of this blog for months of silence (I will write an explanation at some point). But here is some good news from South Korea if you are a gun nut like I am: South Korea’s defence ministry has announced plans to sell up to 86,000 M1 Garand rifles to gun enthusiasts and collectors in the United States. Along with a reported 22,000 M1 carbine rifles, the total value of firearms for sale exceeds $100 million. Okay, so technically these are not a gift (in fact, we gave them to the Koreans a while back), but they are a gift in the sense that M1 Garand… -

Book Review: The Clan Records: Five Stories of Korea, by Kajiyama Toshiyuki
7 Sep 2009 | 6:25 pmThe Clan Records: Five Stories of Korea. Kajiyama Toshiyuki. University of Hawaii Press, 1995 (translated). The Clan Records is a collection of five short stories by a Japanese author who was born in Seoul (then called Keijo) in 1930, where his father was a civil engineer, and grew up there until he was repatriated to Japan in 1945. Kajiyama’s stories of colonial Korea mourn the even then quickly waning of traditional Korea and provide a glimpse of what was. A writer, he died in 1975 at the age of 45 and it is clear that his youth in Korea made a deep and lasting impression on his life.

Battle for North Korea’s Resources
22 Nov 2009 | 10:35 amRadio Free Asia Song-wu Park 11/19/2009 North Korea is pulling back from Chinese mining investments in an effort to independently develop its industry and use the profits to create a self-reliant economy, according to a well-informed North Korean defector. But analysts say it is unlikely that North Korea will be able to lock China out completely, because it lacks the infrastructure and capital needed to develop the country’s vast mineral resources. The defector, who said he had worked as the director of a state trading agency controlled by the military in a major North Korean city, refuted… -
Monument to the African Renaissance taking shape
22 Nov 2009 | 8:30 amUPDATE: The Guradian brings us up to date with the monument’s construction: According to the Guardian: The statue shows a muscular man in a heroic posture, outstretched arms wrapped around his wife and child. Nearly 50 North Korean workers were brought in to build it, because of their expertise with bronze art, and some Senegalese have complained of its communist-era design. It has also drawn criticism from Muslims, who make up 94% of Senegal’s population, because of Islamic prohibitions on representations of the human form. Abdoulaye Wade, Senegal’s octogenarian… -
Now that’s a socialist haircut!
22 Nov 2009 | 8:13 amBack in 2005, the North Korean media was mocked in the western press for encouraging its population to maintain hairstyles consistent with a socialist lifestyle. Judging by the imagery, this was no laughing matter! Well, the AFP reports that Rodong Sinmun has once again taken on the task of reminding the population of the importance of tidy hair: Rodong Sinmun, the ruling-party newspaper, said men should keep their hair short and women should have it tied up. “To keep your hair tidy and simple… is a very important matter for setting the ethos of a sound lifestyle in the… -

Rising cost of narcotics in DPRK drives up home, market prices
20 Nov 2009 | 9:20 amInstitute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES) NK Brief No.09-11-20-1 11/20/2009 The recent hike in narcotics prices in North Korea appears to be due to rising prices on homes and in markets. According to Daily NK, “Recent narcotics prices have grown considerably,” and, “If narcotics prices rise, market prices rise across the board.” As North Korean officials crack down on narcotics production and distribution, the availability of Philopon and other narcotics has been sharply reduced. This reduction in supply is driving up prices. Drug prices in North Korea first jumped sharply in February…

The Art of Isolation
In a country renowned for its international isolation North Korea is equally adept at isolating foreigners visiting their nation. The high priestess of North Korean propaganda
21 Nov 2009 | 10:18 pmThe one certainty in unpredictable North Korea is that if the state detonates a nuclear device or leader Kim Jong-il visits a duck farm, Ri Chun-hee will be on TV boasting about the amazing accomplishment. Ri is the forceful grandmother speaking with the authority of the state as the main newscaster for North Korea's only TV channel. Ri, born in 1943, is an actress turned newscaster who first took to the air in 1971 when the North's state TV channel was taking off. Kim Il-sung, who nurtured her "with warm love and faith", Kim pushed her to be a broadcaster. Usually dressed in traditional… -

The group includes Korea Economic Institute (KEI) president Jack Pritchard, director of KEI research and academic affairs Nicole Finneman, and Scott Snyder, director of the Center for US-Korea Policy at the Asia Foundation. Defector gives insights on North Korean military
19 Nov 2009 | 9:41 pmBBC's Newsnight program spoke to Korean defector Joo-il Kim, who says he was an anti-tank battalion commander in North Korea's army for seven years until he fled the country in 2005. According to Mr Kim, Pyongyang's lack of access to enough new conventional weaponry is what drives its controversial nuclear programme. "Conventional weapon-wise, North Korea is better equipped than South Korea. But most of the weapons are outdated and so, to make up for that weakness, the North concentrates on missiles and nuclear arms development." North Korea is believed to have more than 800 ballistic… -
"An irreversible dismantling of North Korea's nuclear program"
18 Nov 2009 | 9:29 pmSouth Korean President Lee Myung-bak says he and President Obama have agreed to offer North Korea a "grand bargain" aimed at ending the North's nuclear program. Speaking at a joint news conference with Obama, President Lee Myung-bak said the deal would be similar to his proposal for a package of political and economic incentives in exchange for the one-step, irreversible dismantling of North Korea's nuclear program. Lee's grand bargain proposal stems from concerns that North Korea would continue to backtrack on promises after winning concessions in negotiations. Obama said his envoy on North… -

President Obama's Visit to South Korea
19 Nov 2009 | 9:16 amPresident Barack Obama visited South Korea towards the end of his Asia trip on Nov. 19. Though the summit took place amicably (The New York Times photo above shows the news conference after the summit), the public reception on the streets was divided into two camps, one with enthusiastic welcome (middle photo from the OhMyNews) from the conservative forces that stresses the two countries' alliance (some even calling for the reversal of the U.S. decision to relinquish wartime control of South Korea's military), and another camp that harbors critical views on the Obama administration's pressure… -
"The Case of Economic Engagement with North Korea"
18 Nov 2009 | 12:06 pmWhile the U.S. government and the media are preoccupied with the nuclear weapon issue in dealings with North Korea, there are other voices calling for alternative approaches, such as economic engagement, as the following summary from a recent report shows:An Asia Society/U.C.-Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation Task Force Report focuses on economic engagement with North Korea as a peaceful means of inducing change in the DPRK. As the likelihood of some form of US-DPRK talks increases, this report proposes a fundamental rethinking of Washington’s approach toward the DPRK. Economic… -
U.S. Special Envoy to Visit North Korea
10 Nov 2009 | 10:11 amAfter ten months in the office, it looks like Stephen Bosworth (photo), the U.S. special envoy for North Korea, will be actually going to North Korea for diret talks there. This comes after ten months of what seemed like a circumvention of the problem -- holding consultations with all the parties involved with the Six Party Talks with the exception of North Korea, which did not bring a breakthrough in the stalled process towards nuclear disarmament and security guarantees. It is hoped that the Bosworth trip to North Korea, and President Obama's Asia trip, will bring some tangible progress on… -
World Church Leaders Reaffirm Support of Korean Reunification
30 Oct 2009 | 8:00 amKorean Christians in south and north Korea have been early pioneers in civilian, inter-Korea reconciliation efforts as they made initial contacts that paved a way for comprehensive interactions between Koreans separated by division, war memories, ideological confrontations, and geopolitics. Their meetings, held initally in third countries in Europe, Japan and North America, led to the reaffirmation of the desire of Koreans towards reconciliation and reunification.International ecumenical organizations such as the World Council of Churches (WCC) have been supportive of these efforts. The WCC… -
Doing Business in North Korea
28 Oct 2009 | 7:19 am[Korea Report's 300th posting.]In a respite from preoccupation with the North Korean nuclear/security issue, U.S. media is beginning to take notice of other issues, such as joint ventures and business interactions in North Korea, that shed some light on changes occuring within North Korea. The CNN carried an interview with Hyun Jeong-eun, the chairwoman of South Korea's Hyundai Asan, which has pioneered inter-Korea joint ventures with investment of $272 million in North Korea, in projects like the Kaesong Industrial Park and tours to Mount Kumgang. The Fortune magazine recently featured "The…

Have you read "Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar"?
31 Oct 2009 | 11:14 pmIt cost me an arm and a leg (72,000 won), but I bought Edwin G. Pulleyblank's book, "Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar." When it first arrived, I thought I had been ripped off because it was only a flimsy, little 206-page book, including Contents and Index pages. It did not look like it was worth 72,000 won, which is the most I have ever paid for any book, but after reading the first forty pages, I have changed my mind. It was a good investment.Though the book is not that well written or organized, it is crammed full of short-and-sweet grammar rules with one or two example sentences for… -
What does 苟且偸安 mean?
23 Oct 2009 | 11:52 pmYesterday, I bought a Korean book entitled "이이화의 한문 공부," which teaches the basics of classical Chinese writing. I bought the book not only because it was the only book in the store that taught the basics of classical Chinese, but also because it looked pretty good, at least in the store. However, after getting it home and reading more of it, I noticed a few problems. One of the problems with the book is that it assumes the reader already knows the Korean pronunciations for the Chinese characters used in many of the book's example sentences. In other words, the book gives you… -
Does 乳以 mean the same as 以乳?
21 Oct 2009 | 4:18 amToday, I was reading the 四字小學(사자소학), which was a book that Korean children used to study in traditional Korean schools (書堂 - 서당), when I came across something I did not understand. Why does 以 come after the nouns in lines 3 and 4, but before the nouns in lines 5 and 6?[My] father () gave life () [to] my (我 body ().My] mother () raised (鞠 my (我 body ().懷我With [her] stomach () [she] sheltered () me ().哺我With [her] milk () [she] fed () me ().溫我With () clothes () [they] warmed () me ().飽我With () food () [they] filled () me ().From what little I know… -
Was 之 (지) used to make causative verbs?
14 Oct 2009 | 8:55 amAccording to THIS WEB PAGE, the Chinese character 來 (내) was used in classical Chinese to mean, "[He] comes," and 來之 (내지) was used to mean, "[He] makes him come." In other words, the 之 (지) seems to have made "to come" (來) into a causative verb. In classical Chinese, was 之 sometimes used to make causative verbs?I am curious because I want to know if the following translation is correct:A temple ( gave ( [us] rice cake (餠), tea (茶), rice gruel (粥) and soy sauce (醬) and had us eat them.Does the 之 (지) change 食 (식) from "to eat" to "to have someone eat" (… -
What's the problem with "뭐가 불만이냐"
10 Oct 2009 | 4:21 am뭐가 불만이냐 means "What's your problem" or "What's your complaint." It is a low form that is usually used among friends. If you use it with someone who is not your friend, you are asking for a fight. The problem with the expression is that 뭐가, strickly speaking, is an incorrect construction since 뭐 is a contraction of 무엇, so it would be like saying 무엇가, which is incorrect. The correct contraction for 무엇이 is 뭬. However, since few Koreans say "뭬 불만이냐," you could just drop the subject marker and say, "뭐 불만이냐." I think I will try to use 뭬.The…

What President Obama Should Have Learned from His China Trip
22 Nov 2009 | 1:58 amHere is a good read from TIME magazine in regards to the three lessons that President Obama should have learned from his visit to China. Read the article for yourself, but I will go ahead and highlight a few of the pertinent passages from the article: As the Washington Post noted, when Bill Clinton visited Beijing a decade ago, the U.S. owed more money to Spain than it did to China. President Obama’s America owes China some $800 billion and counting. China’s economy is humming again, while America’s is likely to remain sluggish for years. Given its economic health and… -
The Korean DMZ, the Exaggerated Wildlife Refuge
21 Nov 2009 | 5:58 pmIf you are ever in the Chorwon area around Feburary you can see a number of these cranes there: If your travel itinerary for coming months includes places such as Iran, North Korea, China and Tibet, chances would seem pretty good that you are a diplomat being dispatched to some of the world’s hot spots. Or, maybe, you’re George Archibald. Archibald is the co-founder and senior conservationist with the International Crane Foundation near here and he spends about half of every year traveling to distant corners of the world on behalf of cranes. Of all the challenges he’s faced,… -

Effort Against the US Military In Elementary Schools
21 Nov 2009 | 5:17 amHere comes another effort to keep the US military out of public schools: How old is old enough for students to be approached by military recruiters? High school? Junior high? Fourth grade? How about ten weeks into kindergarten? Last week at the dinner table, my five-year-old son announced blithely, “Soldiers came to school today.” He then added, “They only kill bad people. They don’t kill good people.” He made the announcement with the same levity he uses in recalling the plot line of Frog and Toad or a Nemo video. My wife and I looked at each other… -
First Snow (Where I’m At…)
20 Nov 2009 | 11:35 pmWe had our first snow of the season where I’m teaching and living. I had told some students that morning that the sky looked like rain, but they said the forecast was clear. It came down pretty good at times for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. Big, soft flakes. Made for great snowballs. Much of it had melted by the time I looked outside the next morning, but there was still enough to cover the grass in places where the sun hadn’t shown much.
